What Is Hospice Care?

What Is Hospice Care?

Hospice care is specialized care for individuals facing a advanced, life-limiting illness who choose a comfort-focused approach instead of further curative treatment. Hospice shifts the emphasis from trying to cure disease to managing pain and symptoms, preserving dignity, and supporting quality of life.

At Anodyne:

  • Hospice care is provided primarily in your home, where you feel safest, supported by a medically directed interdisciplinary team.
  • Care is guided by your preferences, comfort, and meaningful time with loved ones.
  • Hospice includes medical care, emotional support, spiritual care, and family/caregiver guidance from trained professionals and volunteers.

Who Qualifies for Hospice?

To be eligible for Medicare-covered hospice care in the United States:
  • You must have a terminal diagnosis with a prognosis of six months or less if the illness follows its usual course.
  • Your chosen physician and a hospice medical director must both certify this prognosis.
  • You must elect the hospice benefit, choosing comfort care rather than treatments aimed at curing the illness.
Once enrolled, hospice care can continue beyond six months if your hospice medical director certifies that you remain eligible.
